Well I’m back and apparently, it’s a new year … Yay?
**Let’s just say January isn’t my month, with university applications, exams and driving tests, don’t forget the multitude of birthdays you dare not forget (but probably will) coupled with the fact that you’re not getting another long vacation for another eleven months. Yeah January’s a Hoot. So, practice your apologies and put on some pants, its back to reality.
Welcome home me, it’s only been a couple of weeks since I came back but I want to leave immediately, travel back and go back to ‘no stress’ stress (see previous post), that stress was easy as pie for me compared to this…. **
That bit was written in January, this bit is written in March, I have no idea how university students party so hard this first year. I have to schedule my pee breaks if I want to keep up to date with my work.
Hello everyone, how’s the new year going? Everyone settling down okay?
I really have been struggling to write a post, I admit that’s part of the reason that this post is so late, there hasn’t been much to write about that I can particularly share. But I’m gonna try.
I’m not doing the most glamourous course in university, I’m not doing what I wanted either, but for the first three weeks I spent my time on my high horse. I thought this was going to be the easiest thing in the world, boy was I wrong. Life is kind of funny that way, when your ego self-expands it shoves you into a bloody cactus. Have those moments? Yep this week was test week, I’m still removing the spikes from my arse.
Does anyone else just need another holiday? Perhaps another spiritual retreat? Yeah me too.
Do you realise how similar we are to other people sometimes? I’ve been spending some late afternoons holed up on a comfy leather sofa in Joburg and I’ve come to notice a couple of things.
First of all, hipsters love this place, no matter how overpriced the macaroons are, they show up at all times of the day. Apparently cold brew is a thing now, I thought it always existed but maybe it’s just me. Dressed in skinny jeans, their Harry Styles Shoes and tattoos on their necks of tigers and flowers. No judgement, it’s just that you guys are a lot… like you could form a club, seriously. I do admire the bold fashion choices though, I could never put pieces together like that.
Next, it would be the work junkies, hello dad, with their pressed suits and Venti coffees. They plonk themselves down and discuss business over their large shiny mobiles, type vigorously and stare down any loud chewer, aspiring DJ (they are here too) or other mobile user.
Of course, here is my category, no it’s not a hipster, it is close enough though. We sit in these surprisingly comfortable chairs, with our MacBook’s, cool sunglasses and earphones, all alone might I add. We are either writing(me), making a fancy presentation or editing music on their app or whatever it is you kids do these days. I don’t consider myself a hipster purely on the fashion sense, mainly because I have none. That is pretty much the sum of it. We happen to be the majority right now. Around 70% of this Starbucks population consists of mac users. Apples and mermaids go pretty well, take that out of context and it makes no sense whatsoever….
I admit, we are predictable. This fact is quite deflating, it sad to know that your ability to surprise is close to fictional.
Another fact is that as predictable as we seem to be, as easy as it is to judge this cover, our stories are so vast and span continents. In this this coffee shop sits people from countries just as unique as this one. I see new relationships blossom, software being developed as fast as one can type and definitely some up and coming artists frequent this place. You try finding a more diverse group of people in a single space almost 24/7. I have been here at all times of the day. Whether it be at seven in the morning of nine in the evening, it’s always busy. Baristas are always welcoming and the atmosphere is as lively as when the place first opened.
Everyone in this Coffee shop has a different story, they like the predictability of Starbucks, the quality of the coffee, the types of people that sit next to us. We enjoy that we have a mutual understanding of space and the little joys we get from a small smile from a stranger. Daydreaming is not common in here, we all know the look. This place is unsurprising yes, it’s true, but it’s also quite unlike another at the same time. Like ourselves it takes bits and bobs to create a whole, and like ourselves it becomes this wonderful and unique individual like no other.
Well I hope everyone has a lovely month ahead 🙂 Enjoy the month of March, before you know it June will be upon us.
Quote for the week: “Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you can’t go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does.” –Margaret Atwood–
Some Jams (not the preserved kind): Silence – Marshmello ft Khalid – Really good, came across the song by accident but now I can’t get it out of my head
Let You Down – NF – this is one good kinda depressing yet kinda a never repeat your mistake song. Yeah, I’m not explaining it so well… just listen to it and you will understand what I mean.
More Than You Know – Axwell Λ Ingrosso This song is super upbeat, something to get you in the mood for Saturday night #Cantstopwontstop #whatverthekidssaythesedays
Movie for the week: I can’t say I have much to recommend… I mean it’s been a long three months of telenovelas and Korean dramas (I feel your judgement). So … maybe I’ll recommend watching the Black Panther, I’ve been trying to go for weeks so I hope I get time this weekend. Let me know how you found it in the comment section.
